Dear colleague,

 

As the end of the year approaches, so does the start of FP2020’s year of transition: on January 26, 2021 we will begin our transformation to the new partnership with the launch of FP2020’s last annual progress report and a celebration of FP2020, and we’ll open the process for partners to begin to develop their commitments to the new partnership. We will complete our metamorphosis by International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) in November 2021, with a celebration of our new partnership fully formed, a Secretariat spread out in hubs across several regions of the world, and staffed by local experts and colleagues, and new commitments from current and new partners to make this a truly global partnership by going beyond FP2020’s 69 focus countries. We’ll maintain our focus on countries who are still seeking to expand their family planning programs, but all will be welcome to participate to improve programs, policies, and ultimately – outcomes for all users of contraception.

 

Of course, any transition involves careful planning, so we have been working in the FP2020 Secretariat to prepare. In our last newsletter, we introduced the Transition Management Team that will be implementing the transition. In November, the FP2020 Reference Group met for the last time this year and discussed FP2020’s transition — specifically the transition of our governance structure. The Reference Group recognizes the important role that political leadership plays in expanding access to family planning — from financing, to supplies, to the accessibility of services themselves. In the next iteration of the partnership, the governance structure will shift to support and reinforce the leadership needed to accelerate progress for women and girls around the world. This fall we have been reflecting on the lessons we’ve drawn from the FP2020 partnership in a series of publications and community discussions. The latest of these resources, Ready to Save Lives: A Preparedness Toolkit for SRH Care in Emergencies, was released on November 24th. Ready to Save Lives is a guide for decision makers who want to ensure the ongoing delivery of family planning care in emergencies. It was work begun by our beloved colleague, Jennifer Schlecht, and we, along with her colleagues at the Inter-Agency Working Group on Reproductive Health in Crises continued the work, linking the international reproductive health and humanitarian response communities, led by FP2020 Senior Technical Advisor Lorelei Goodyear. We continue to miss Jenn every day, and we honor her work and her passion with this resource.

READY TO SAVE LIVES: NEW TOOL FOR CONTINUATION OF CARE IN CRISIS

A new resource, Ready To Save Lives: A Preparedness Toolkit for SRH Care in Emergencies, is designed to help government decision makers and other stakeholders prepare for continued access to reproductive healthcare in emergencies — including pandemics, natural disasters, or conflict. The Ready to Save Lives toolkit brings together existing guidance on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) as a starting point for stakeholders to establish protocols that ensure the continuity of care. Partnership and cooperation between the family planning and HIV communities remains a critical piece in building a future where women and girls can access healthcare that serves all their needs - including pregnancy prevention and HIV testing and treatment.

PACE’s new interactive Digital Health Compendium enables users to explore case studies across a range of digital health technologies used to enhance family planning programs, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa, but also in other regions of the world. Users can sign up to receive notifications when new case studies are added or contact PACE to submit their own.
