Financing

Dear colleague,

This past month has left me inspired. While 2025 has certainly reshaped the family planning sector, seven months in, our commitment to emerge as a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable movement is clear.

At FP2030, we started this year off as you all did – rocked by cuts to family planning budgets globally. We now know 70% of global donor funding for family planning has either been cut or is at imminent risk. A new brief from FP2030’s global advocacy team, Understanding the Impact of Foreign Aid Disruptions on International Family Planning and Reproductive Health CSOs, seeks to document the impact of these cuts. Research for this brief included more than 25 conversations with FP2030 focal points and trusted partners across our global network and regional hubs. The insights are devastating but will come as no shock: 33 of 43 respondents to the questionnaire distributed as part of these conversations reported stockouts or are anticipating them, with injectables and implants most at risk. Many partners reported immediate layoffs. Some projects were halted entirely.

Despite these challenges, I see the sector pivoting, focusing on domestic resource mobilization, innovative funding mechanisms, and cost-saving measures. As part of the Made Possible by Family Planning campaign, we are mobilizing new FP2030 commitments, many of which have new funding for the sector as part of the commitment. We also need to double down on self-care technologies and innovations, like self-injectable contraception, not only as a cost-saving measure but also as a way to increase autonomy in reproductive health.

This crisis calls not for despair, but for reinvention. Read on to hear more about how we are working to meet this moment, and thank you for your continued partnership.

Sincerely,

Samukeliso Dube

💸 Sexual and Reproductive Health is a Development Best Buy — So Why Aren’t We Funding it?

A new op‑ed from FP2030 and PMNCH published recently on More to Her Story makes a powerful case for SRHR as one of the most cost‑effective investments in development. The author highlights that these programs deliver outsized returns—from improved maternal health and reduced unplanned pregnancy to economic empowerment for women and broader gender equality. Yet, despite overwhelming evidence of its impact, SRHR remains chronically underfunded by global donors and national governments alike.

🌎Latin America & Caribbean

🤝 Glasswing Mexico × FP2030 Girls Club

FP2030’s Latin American and Caribbean Hub recently visited Glasswing Mexico’s safe space for girls, a powerful initiative where girls aged 10 – 18 gain life skills, confidence, and empowerment through peer learning and mentorship.

Together with Glasswing, FP2030’s Latin American and Caribbean Hub will partner to sustain and scale these safe spaces—because when girls are equipped with the tools and support they need, they become the next generation of advocates, leaders, and changemakers. These spaces are more than programs—they are launching pads for transformative impact across communities.

🔦 Civil Society Spotlight

María Paula Martínez, managing director of FP2030’s Latin America & Caribbean Hub, has been elected as a member of the ForoLAC Steering Committee for the 2025-2027 term.

ForoLAC, Latin American and Caribbean Forum for the Assurance of Reproductive Health Supplies, is a key regional platform that brings together civil society to strengthen advocacy, share knowledge, and coordinate efforts across Latin America and the Caribbean.

🌏 Asia & Pacific

📘 Advancing Rights-Based Narratives

In collaboration with the Asia Pacific Alliance and IPPF East & Southeast Asia & Oceania, FP2030’s Asia & Pacific Hub has launched the Development of Positive Narratives initiative to strengthen positive, rights-based messaging around family planning and sexual and reproductive health and rights. This work is vital as we face growing opposition to sexual and reproductive rights across the region—and beyond.

This work will inform a regional narrative strategy that amplifies voices advocating for dignity, equity, and choice. By proactively shaping the conversation, we are strengthening the foundation for policies and programs that protect rights and expand access to reproductive health across the Asia and Pacific region.

📘 Advancing Adolescent Choice: A Shared Learning Agenda

FP2030’s North, West, and Central Africa Hub, through Youth and Partnership Manager Margaret Bolaji, contributed to the development of the Global Learning Agenda on Adolescent Contraception Access and Choice 2025, in collaboration with key partners.

This agenda brings together youth, researchers, implementers, donors, and governments to align around a shared set of priority research questions. By identifying critical evidence gaps, the agenda serves as a roadmap for improving access to high-quality, youth-responsive contraceptive services and supporting adolescents in making informed choices about if and when to use contraception.

📅 RHNK Conference 2025

At the 8th Pan-African Adolescent & Youth SRHR Scientific Conference, convened by Reproductive Health Network Kenya on June 26, FP2030 led a dynamic side event focused on self-care innovations—including self-injection, HIV self-testing, and digital health tools.

The event brought together leaders from government, civil society, academia, and the private sector to accelerate adolescent and youth access to self-care solutions.

The conference underscored the urgency of increasing domestic financing, strengthening coordination among stakeholders, and ensuring youth voices shape policies and programs that directly affect their health and rights.
