Evidence shows that, to reach global goals related to women and girls’ access to modern family planning (FP) and gender equality, it is critical to understand and account for the role of men and boys as users of reproductive health services, as partners for millions of women & girls around the world, and as advocates in their communities.
For five months, two mobile clinics covered more than 10,000 kilometers to serve 59 remote localities in seven districts. More than 14,000 people benefited from pre- and postnatal consultations, family planning services, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) screening and treatment and educational sessions.
Universal health coverage (UHC) characterizes an ideal where all people have access to the health services they need, when and where they need them, without financial hardship. In the same way that the long-term consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic will place a heavy burden on health systems, so too will the lack of reproductive health care.
In this newsletter, we take a closer look at the data from this year’s report. Sesi Aliu, FP2030 Manager, Data & Performance Management, provides an excellent overview of what we learned, including how our collaboration has improved contraceptive equity, as well as the information people have when choosing a method of contraception and the range of contraceptives available.
At the outset of 2020, we knew it would be a challenge to present a complete picture of progress over the eight years of the FP2020 partnership, primarily because indicator estimates included in each year’s report are largely based on data collected in previous years. What we didn’t expect was a global pandemic to further complicate this process.

The WHO FP Accelerator project supports partners and ministries of health (MoH) to accelerate quality and rights-based family planning (FP) services within the broader frameworks of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the WHO 13th Global Programme of Work (GPW13). The project contributes specifically to attainment of SDG targets 3.1, 3.7 and 5.6, and to the GPW13 goal of 1 billion more people covered by UHC. The WHO-FP Accelerator Project is coordinated by the Contraception and Fertility Care (CFC) Unit in the WHO Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research (WHO/SRH) and implemented with WHO’s Regional and Country offices.
2019-2020 annual report shows that 320 million women and girls are now using modern contraception in 69 low-income countries. 13 countries have doubled the number of modern contraceptive users since 2012.
The services related to family planning and reproductive health are being declared ‘essential services’ so that they are not discontinued in any situation arising out of pandemic or natural disaster.
