Transitions are moments of high possibility. A chance to start fresh; a chance to change course. An opportunity to build on what we've learned and strike out in new directions. This year is a time of major transitions for our partnership, as FP2020 becomes FP2030.
For five months, two mobile clinics covered more than 10,000 kilometers to serve 59 remote localities in seven districts. More than 14,000 people benefited from pre- and postnatal consultations, family planning services, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) screening and treatment and educational sessions.
In our next phase, the partnership will expand beyond our initial 69 focus countries. We’ll collaborate more closely across sectors, creating stronger ties for accountability, and engaging with partners beyond family planning.
In this newsletter, we take a closer look at the data from this year’s report. Sesi Aliu, FP2030 Manager, Data & Performance Management, provides an excellent overview of what we learned, including how our collaboration has improved contraceptive equity, as well as the information people have when choosing a method of contraception and the range of contraceptives available.
As the pandemic continues into its second year, the full impact on family planning and women and girls access to services still isn’t known, and won’t be for some time. Still, to begin to understand the pandemic’s effects, FP2020 began convening family planning data partners in April 2020 to better understand how the COVID-19 pandemic was affecting programs and services.
At the outset of 2020, we knew it would be a challenge to present a complete picture of progress over the eight years of the FP2020 partnership, primarily because indicator estimates included in each year’s report are largely based on data collected in previous years. What we didn’t expect was a global pandemic to further complicate this process.
The COVID-19 pandemic has substantially strained health systems across the globe. In particular, documented disruptions to voluntary family planning and reproductive health care due to competing health priorities, service disruptions, stockouts, and lockdowns are significantly impacting reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health.
2019-2020 annual report shows that 320 million women and girls are now using modern contraception in 69 low-income countries. 13 countries have doubled the number of modern contraceptive users since 2012.
As the end of the year approaches, so does the start of FP2020’s year of transition: on January 26, 2021 we will begin our transformation to the new partnership with the launch of FP2020’s last annual progress report and a celebration of FP2020, and we’ll open the process for partners to begin to develop their commitments to the new partnership.
